His name is a contraction of "sweetie" and "tweet." The character was created in 1942 by Bob Clampett and made his debut in the short film "A Tale of Two Kitties." However, the character designed by Clampett did not yet look like Tweety and was named Orson on paper. Mel Blanc provided the voice for Tweety.
